As a group in Organizational Behavior, we created a theoretical model based on what skills we think are most important to become an effective leader by our previous experiences. This summer I had the opportunity to be apart of a team for building a website for the company, Choose Hope. With not having a background in web design, I knew I was going to have to demonstrate other traits to rise to the tasks given to me. Working in a team setting can often be a challenge but I grew as an individual with having this opportunity. With this experience I was able to learn directly from the leaders in the team and also was able to shine as a leader in some situations once I gained their trust.
Just because one isn’t a manager doesn’t mean they can’t be an effective leader. A leader can contribute many different skills to a team. The ability to make decisions in a team setting is crucial. The leader of the team often needs to take reign. When creating a website there are endless options on layouts, colors, fonts, pages, and titles; if everyone in the team likes different things and never narrowed the options down the project would never get done. Integrative thinking is a key component when dealing with decision-making. A leader who using integrative thinking welcomes complexity into the discussion by introducing two different options that they think would work best for the situation.
As a leader, it is extremely important to be able to provide motivation through out the whole course of the project. Through out the summer we had multiple releases for the website where deadlines needed to be met. This put some pressure on the team because usually with deadlines there is money involved and you don’t want to be the person that lets down the whole group and even worse the company. The leader needs to encourage the group on the goal commitment; even falling behind by one day can make or break the final deadline. The whole goal for the project was to have a completed website go live by mid-July without any errors. I often had to motivate myself personally; with having the goals of no errors I had the responsibility to look over every single page of the website to make sure everything worked and looked proper. At times this job was tedious since most of the product pages look exactly the same but I still had to be careful to detail.
Communication is a key component in many situations but with working in multiple teams it is essential. Not only did I have to communicate with the members that were on my team but we also had to make sure our web developers were on the same page as us because they are located in a different city. This made communicating difficult at times because we had to communicate through emails and phone conferences. Without face-to-face interaction it can be a challenge on reading someone since you can’t express your body language through a computer screen or a phone. This is where network structure comes into play; we had to make sure that everyone involved was present during a phone conference to eliminate mistakes and have faster results.
Although, I was not head of the project I was able to use these skills to be an effective leader at times. It is important for someone to step up to the plate and to demonstrate these abilities to achieve the finished product. Communication is a significant role when working in a team setting and being an effective leader. Without proper communication nothing will be accomplished properly, everyone will be on different pages, and no one will know the goal commitment of the project. Having this experience under my belt with help me with future projects and I will be able to use these skills in a proper manner to be the best leader that I can be. With being in the HealthCare Administration program I know I will one day have to step up to the plate and make executive decisions that will be best for the situation.
